Skipper Steede clobbers tourists

Eton College 221-9 Captain Albert Steede smashed the second century against visiting Eton College as a National West Select ran out comfortable winners at Police Field yesterday.

Steede stroked 11 fours and two sixes in his 103 which laid the foundation for the total of 329. Eton replied with 221-9 as they lost by 108 runs.

Steede added 126 for the first wicket with Leon Place before retiring his innings when the score was 241-2.

The runs kept flowing with Ricky Brangman scoring 43, Cleon Scotland 42 and Wendell White 38 before the latter two also retired. Edward Williams was the only Eton bowler to take more than one wicket, though his pair came at a costly 85 runs from nine overs.

Wayward bowling contributed to 49 wides in the Eton College innings as a total of 72 extras helped them pass the 200 mark in reply, though the 330 they needed to win was always going to be too steep.

Opener Adam Goldberg was their top scorer with a fluent 61, including four fours and two sixes, as he put on 64 for the first wicket with Adam England (12), before Durward Cann broke the partnership in his first over. Eton captain David Ferreira's 17 in the middle order was the next high score.

Wendell White claimed two for 14 off six overs for the Select.

Southampton 251 Eton College 125 Janeiro Tucker marked his debut as captain of league champions Southampton Rangers with a blistering 141 on Saturday as Eton suffered the first loss of their Bermuda tour.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat, Tucker must have had some regrets when, after an opening stand of 40 between Keith Wainwright (9) and David Stoneham (19), they quickly slumped to 58-5. Tucker watched two partners depart quickly after coming in at number five.

Two more wickets went down before 100 as Rangers struggled to 91-7. But Tucker then let loose with a flurry of boundaries as he and Ryan Belboda (23) added 104 for the eighth wicket to rebuild the innings.

Belboda hit four fours off 53 balls to play a good supporting role for Tucker who delighted the crowd with some dashing strokes, smashing 19 fours and six sixes off 116 balls. After Belboda's departure, Tucker added another 50 for the ninth wicket with David Saltus before the Rangers innings ended in just the 41st over.

Rangers scored their first 50 in the 11th over, 100 by the 21st, 150 in the 27th and 200 after 35 overs as they maintained a scoring rate of more than five an over.

Alastair Dalrymple, a left arm swing bowler, was the pick of the Eton bowlers, claiming five for 62 from 8.4 overs while seamer Fergus Boyd claimed three for 50.

Tailender Harry Smith, in his first match on the tour, led the Eton batting with 33 not out from 41 balls while number four batsman Adam England scored 31 and Edward Williams 18. Williams and Smith assured that 100 was reached, putting on 36 for the eighth wicket in taking the score from 61.

Pace bowler Garrick Williams claimed four for 22 from 10 overs while spinner Sidney Simmons took four for 20 and Ryan Belboda two for 35.

Eton now have a two-day rest before they play an Under-19 East Select on Wednesday. The match has been switched to Southampton Oval.
