2,000+ people taking part in 100 Day Challenge

More than 2,200 people have decided to live healthier lives as part of the 100 Day Challenge with astonishing results.

As the graphs show, in only 17 days more than 31,000 miles have been walked and nearly a tonne of weight has been lost.

The Live Healthy Bermuda 100 Day Challenge was launched on January 16 in conjunction with this paper's Have a Heart Campaign.

While the paper's Have a Heart campaign seeks to draw attention to the issues of heart health all year and will be tied to stories on the topic.

The challenge, which is sponsored by Bermuda Diabetes Association, Lindo's Supermarkets, Aspen Insurance, the Department of Health and Quaker Oats requires participants to work in teams of between two and ten people, which organisers hope will increase the competition and keep everyone motivated.

Apparently, the challenge has worked and Terry Faulkenberry, of Aspen Insurance, said the organisers are thrilled with the results.

He said: "The results are very encouraging. As a group, we have now walked the equivalent of over 31,000 miles and lost nearly 1 tonne.

"And that's in the first 17 days. It's going to be interesting to see how we do as the week's progress. This is a 100-day challenge and we are talking about lifestyle change, so it's still early days."

There are a total of 2,280 participants in 375 teams and 320 are recording their numbers each week.

Each team was also challenged to come-up with a creative name and now organisers announce they will be celebrating this creativity each year.

The following five teams were a few of the favourites and each team member will be receiving a pedometer: 6 GI JANES...& A JOE, BOY-OH-BOY & THE MUFFIN TOPS, DIET HARD WITH SOME VEGGIES, OFF (THE COACH) & RUNNING!, and THE ENERGIZER BUNNIES.
