Aberdeen steal one from PHC
Devonshire Colts pulled off another come-from-behind act yesterday at their Frog Lane field when they managed to snatch a victory away from the grasp of the hapless PHC Zebras.
Two superbly-taken goals by Quincey Aberdeen late in the second half were enough to bring the Colts the win after the Zebras' dynamic young midfielder, Tokia Russell, had given them the lead.
The Colts did very little to impress the partisan crowd in the first half. In fact, but for the inexperience of the young PHC forwards, they could have found themselves trailing by at least two goals at the half.
Lanky Raynel Lightbourne found himself on the end of a telling pass from Meshach Wade and had a clear run at goal. With the shot on, the striker decided to run the ball a little too far and blasted it into the side-netting.
Russell had the best chance in the first half for the Zebras only seconds later but could only screw the ball wide when well placed.
After their powerful striker Craig Smith was removed from the game early through injury, Colts looked somewhat out of sorts in front of the Zebras' goal.
The Zebras had always threatened to find the net and it was a beautifully executed play that finally did it for them.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Dana Rawlins drifted a perfect cross from the left flank and Russell struck a first-time half-volley that whistled past Antoine Lightbourne.
For the next five minutes, Mike Dill and company appeared to have put up the shutters in front of their goal as they solidly turned back everything that Colts could throw at them.
Youthful Blenn Bean was especially notable with solid defensive work from his left-back position.
But as the pressure mounted, Colts found the rhythm that made them such contenders last season.
In the 82nd minute, Mark Ray provided the ever-dangerous Aberdeen with the perfect pass that gave the striker a clear run at the target.
With the stand-in goalkeeper Damian Tucker advancing, Aberdeen coolly slotted the ball inside the upright for the equaliser.
Almost before the celebrations ended, Aberdeen won the match for his team-mates! Again a fine series of passes ended with the ball at his feet near the edge of the penalty area. Advancing only a few steps, he drilled the ball past the sprawling 'keeper for the winner.
The win was the perfect tune-up for Colts' midweek clash with Boulevard in the Martonmere Cup final. The loss, however, pushed the Zebras down to second from the bottom in the First Division standings.
