soon be moving to a new location.

Last week the Red Cross submitted an application to the Department of Planning to convert "Charleswood'', a Berry Hill Road property, into offices and training rooms.

Pending the outcome, the Red Cross may decide to go ahead and buy the building.

Red Cross spokesman Mr. Frank Gamble said the organisation has been looking for a new location for some years.

He said increasing demand for first aid training programmes mean the charity has now outgrown its rented Front Sreet headquarters.

"We have applied to purchase the property if Planning gives us change of use,'' Mr. Gamble said. "The Red Cross has had a building fund for a number of years. The problem was finding suitable premises.'' The property, suitably located near King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, became available last year, he said.

Larger premises would mean the Red Cross could expand its First Aid scheme.

"Over the years there has been a steady demand for the courses,'' he said.

"We want to introduce new courses. Through pairing with the US Red Cross we will be able to expand activities in the community.

"It is very difficult when you are relying on generosity. To assist the courses, we really needed a place of our own.'' If the sale goes ahead, the Red Cross will be launching a major capital funds campaign.

The Red Cross now teaches four courses a week. Entitled "Community First Aid and Safety'', they cover First Aid for adults, infants and children.
