England need to change their game plan

There were a few fascinating international games this week including England versus Holland in what ended up being a cracking match. The English came back late on but they must learn that they can’t continue to play the same way against different opposition. They allowed the Dutch to play the ball around with minimal fuss and in the end it was the difference between a good result and one that raised questions about their ability.England were able to get two goals and level the game because the Dutch relaxed a bit but then they allowed a player of Arjen Robben’s quality all sorts of space and he punished them.It was unfortunate for Chris Smalling and Klaas Jan Huntelaar as they collided in an accident as they were both eager to impress. These sort of things happen and I don’t know how severe the injuries were but let’s just hope that they can be fit soon and get back into the action.France beating Germany was a surprise result given how the Germans have been playing lately and the French haven’t been doing things well but the result shows how the game changes from one day to the another.Lionel Messi finally got his name on the scoresheet for Argentina and their fans must be thrilled with his hat-trick. We’ve have seen him do this all of the time at club level so it’s nothing new to him. We just need him to start delivering on the international stage.* * *Liverpool were let off the hook in their Carling Cup win over Cardiff because the Welsh side really had the game in their hands. When Liverpool missed their first two penalties, Cardiff had a real chance to pull off a major upset but it wasn’t to be.Steven Gerrard going over to his cousin Ashley to console him after missing the final penalty was good to see. Hopefully he doesn’t let the impact of what happened affect him for the rest of the season. The defeat bodes well for my West Ham this weekend. We go to Cardiff and hopefully can push on in our bid to regain our top flight status. If we want to top the division this is a game that we have to win and we’ll have to put them under pressure from the outset.Sometimes playing on the road is better than at home because you don’t feel any pressure and can play freely* * *Harry Redknapp is entering his most important spell at the helm of Tottenham after their loss to heated rivals Arsenal on Sunday and must now play Manchester United. It was great result for Arsenal. It was good to see Theo Walcott get the two goals because he had been struggling with his form. Hopefully some of his critics will back off and let him play. The result shouldn’t raise any doubts about Redknapp’s ability to coach England. It was a one-off thing and his loyalty is unwavering at Spurs. They were the club who reached out to him when he wanted to get back into coaching. Now he has a decision to make and it would be great if he could have both jobs. I know he wants Spurs to get into the Champions League.Going to United won’t be easy. A lot of teams dig themselves in a hole by sitting back. They need to attack from the outset.Liverpool welcome the Gunners to Anfield and this should be an interesting one. If Arsenal can attack the weaknesses of Liverpool then they will have a great chance.
