Dangerous speed bumps need replacing
December 6, 2013
Dear Sir,
Several years ago when the Corporation of Hamilton officals realised that many motorists were speeding on city streets, they installed rolling type of speed bumps which were an instant success.
Public Works in their wisdom declined to do the same on public roads, mainly because these bumps might be dangerous for emergency vehicles. However recently these rolling type of speed bumps have been installed throughout the island which has turned out to be a big mistake.
Even with advance warning signs these bumps are easy to miss, and just recently a motor cyclist succumbed after “flying” over such a bump near Harrington Sound school.
All the roads within the Bermuda College campus have a different type of speed bump that really deters speeding, and is not dangerous.
However to ignore them will result in a very unpleasent shaking sensation, so they really do slow vehicles down.
Public Works should admit that by installing these rolling type of speed bumps they made a mistake before someone else is killed. After which they should replace all the bumps with the type used at the college.
