BCB to decide on KO cancellation

Bermuda Cricket Board will make a ruling this week on the quarter-final knockout match between defending champions Willow Cuts and Bailey’s Bay which was called off on Sunday at White Hill Field because the pitch was not prepared. It was a disappointing start to the competition which is now being sponsored by Logic and is called the Logic Knockout Championship, as only two of the four matches were played, with Somerset defaulting their match against Southampton Rangers after failing to field a team. The other two matches produced lopsided wins for St David’s and Cleveland.Stephen Outerbridge said his Bay team will await a decision from the BCB regarding the match with the champions. “The game was called off quite early, about 10.30 or earlier,” said the Bailey’s Bay captain. “I went up there but between me and Dexter (Basden) and the umpires a decision was made,” said Outerbridge.“I don’t know how it works. I’ll just leave it up to the Bermuda Cricket Board to make the decision. We would have liked to have played against Willow Cuts but at the end of the day we didn’t play and we will leave it up to the powers that be.”Willow Cuts won the cup last season when Somerset forfeited the final after failing to field a team. The cricket season is winding down with two knockout competitions but teams are finding it difficult fielding teams in the last month of the season. Both St George’s and Western Stars played with ten men in their matches against Cleveland and St David’s and were soundly beaten. Some players have already starting playing football — Malachi Jones of Willow Cuts played for PHC and Cleveland’s Treadwell Gibbons was in goal for Dandy Town during Dudley Eve matches on Monday — so teams could be further depleted when a full slate of Lindo’s T20 matches are scheduled for Saturday, on the same day that a Dudley Eve double-header takes place.Bailey’s Bay, St David’s, Western Stars and Somerset are all scheduled to play two matches on Saturday in the T20 competition. Bay are set to meet Devonshire Rec in their first T20 match at Sea Breeze and then Flatts in the afternoon encounter while St David’s will play St George’s and Cleveland in their group matches.Western Stars will take on Willow Cuts and PHC in a double-header that has been switched to PHC Field because Dudley Eve football is scheduled for St John’s Field while Somerset will play Somerset Bridge and Southampton Rangers in two matches at Somerset Cricket Club. The semi-finals of the Logic Knockout are scheduled for this Sunday with St David’s due to meet the winners of the Cuts-Bay match and Southampton Rangers taking on Cleveland in the other semi-final. Logic Knockout Plate semi-finals, involving the bottom five teams in the league tables, will also take place on Sunday, with Warwick playing PHC at Devonshire Rec and Somerset Bridge taking on Flatts at White Hill Field. The finals of both knockout competitions are scheduled for September 15, with the Lindo’s T20 competition finishing the following weekend with the semi-finals and final at Sea Breeze Oval which signals the end of the cricket season.
