New homes: Some of the prefabricated housing in Dockyard are nearing completion.

Dockyard’s first new prefabricated housing, complete with Bermuda-style roofs, has been raised near ageing homes by Victoria Row.The project, which ties in with extensive infrastructural renovations at the West End, may be complete come October or November, said West End Development Corporation (Wedco) general manager Andrew Dias.“We’ve come over somewhat of a learning curve, as we haven’t done anything like this before,” he said. Two buildings, comprising eight housing units, have gone up with “definite Bermudian architecture”, Mr Dias said, adding: “We’re working on a third now, and the remaining two will go up in the next two months.“It’s gone well, all considering. We’ve had pretty good weather — it’s not work that can be done in high winds, since each panel that we put in place weighs between eight and 15 tons.”Wedco expects to receive the remaining construction material for the project over the next two to four weeks.Meanwhile, pipes between the waste water treatment plant in Dockyard and housing on Boaz Island have been laid, enabling Wedco to service existing buildings and potential future developments.“It’s not just for sewerage disposal, but also with so-called grey water, which can be used for flushing and irrigation, and which reduces potable water consumption,” Mr Dias said.Wedco also announced yesterday that work with the Department of Corrections should bring about water savings of $36,000 to $46,000 annually.Westgate Correctional Facility uses potable Wedco water, including for flushing, but can now be supplied with reclaimed water for flushing. A water tank for use by Corrections has also been upgraded by Wedco, for storing the reclaimed supply. The prison currently spends between $100,000 and $120,000 annually on water.Public Works Minister Trevor Moniz hailed the collaboration as “a very positive example of several Ministries and Wedco working together”.
