Fahy encouraged by workers of tomorrow
Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy will host a small reception later today to mark the end of this year’s summer employment initiative. Some 150 college and university students will finish up nearly three months in the Government’s Summer Employment Programme (SEP) that started in May.Students were placed in various government departments, the private sector, non-profit and charitable organisations. After conducting site visits to gauge their feedback earlier this week, Sen Fahy said the participants represented an “exceptional” group of students.“I was delighted to visit with a few of them at their place of employment to hear from them firsthand about how this programme has benefited them,” said Sen Fahy.“I can honestly say that we have some very talented, passionate, bright and creative young people who are very eager to take their place in the Bermuda workforce once they have completed their studies.”The students selected are pursuing careers in fields that include Law, Business, Health, Science, Education, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Communications and Hospitality. Each participant will receive a $5,000 stipend at the end of the programme. The Minister said the SEP continues to be a “worthwhile initiative”.“It is evidence of this Government’s continued commitment to provide training and development opportunities to ensure a sustainable workforce.“A critical part of our broader workforce goals is to ensure that we have qualified human resources to support Bermuda’s economy.“We are making progress with the drafting of a National Training Plan, and we see the SEP as an important component to the overall plan.”
