Dangerous driving trial date set for UK man in connection with Maj Wheddon’s death

The man behind the wheel of a car that crashed killing Bermuda Regiment officer Christian Wheddon will go on trial in the UK in OctoberMaj Wheddon, 43, was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Warrior car travelling along the A34 in Oxfordshire, UK, last September when the vehicle left the road and crashed. Maj Wheddon was killed in the accident while the driver, Netani Kepa, 27, was injured.Thames Valley Police launched an investigation and later charged Mr Kepa, with causing death by dangerous driving.At a plea hearing at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday, Mr Kepa pleaded not guilty to the charge and will go on trial on October 16.According to court officials, Mr Kepa had been willing to enter a guilty plea to the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving, but that offer was rejected by prosecutors.Maj Wheddon was being groomed to take over as the Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment. He had been in the UK for three months taking part in military training exercises with the British Army before he was killed.His body was returned to Bermuda and buried with full military honours following a funeral service at the Anglican Cathedral in Hamilton.Maj Wheddon is survived by a three-year-old daughter.
