A prayer for Mandela

Nelson Mandela’s continued ill-health has inspired a change to an event intended to celebrate the 54th anniversary of desegregation in Bermuda.Imagine Bermuda announced last week that it would host “B 2 Gather” at the Queen Elizabeth Park today with the goal of bringing people together and building new relationships. However, in light of Mr Mandela’s deteriorating health, the group said the event will now start with a brief session of prayer and reflection on the iconic figure.“July 2, 1959 was the first day of freedom of access for all, a significant milestone in Bermuda history,” an organiser said. “During that time in South Africa, Mandela and other kindred spirits were having their peaceful protests threatened with violence of the regime.“The two countries, separated by thousands of miles, were linked in many ways.”* B 2 Gather will take place today at the Queen Elizabeth Park between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
