Spending habits survey to start tomorrow

A team of 70 interviewers from the Department of Statistics will set out tomorrow to start a study of residents’ spending habits. The fifth Household Expenditure Survey (HES) is Bermuda’s first in nine years, and will target 700 households. The residences, which have already been notified, will be polled on income spending, as well as keeping a diary of expenditure over two weeks. The confidential survey will be used to revise the categories of goods and services in the Consumer Price Index, as well as allowing statisticians to set the benchmarks for household consumption — used to estimate the Island’s economic growth, or Gross Domestic Product. The survey will also reveal the Island’s overall economic well-being.Interviewers will wear a fluorescent green sash and carry official identification, plus a letter of authenticity issued by the Department. The household visits will run until August 31.Useful website: www.statistics.gov.bm
