‘Our infrastructure is not acceptable for what is a World Heritage site’

There was standing room only at a packed public meeting organised by the Corporation of St George’s last night to discuss latest developments in the town.Mayor Garth Rothwell introduced the Corporation’s new team of aldermen and councillors before providing the audience with an update on the organisation’s efforts to improve the town.Mayor Rothwell listed a catalogue of infrastructure repairs that needed to be carried out, adding that he would be seeking increased funding from Government.“We realise that in the current economic climate funding is not easy to find, but we believe that there should be a rebalancing of the national budget in favour of St George’s” Mr Rothwell said. “Our infrastructure is not acceptable for what is a World Heritage site.”Mr Rothwell revealed that the Corporation has recently received a letter of support from Government for plans for a new marina development for the new town. The marina was backed by alderman Steve Hollis, who said: “The corporation is 100 percent behind the marina — it’s a fabulous idea and we definitely see it as going in the right direction as far as helping the economy.”Councillor George Sutherland, who is in charge of security in the town, confirmed that CCTV security cameras were now up and running. And he also announced that a stronger police presence in the town will kick in once minor repair work had been carried out on the town’s Police Station. Two shifts will be based at the St George’s station, which will be manned until midnight, Mr Sutherland said. And Councillor Elizabeth Christopher, who heads up Tourism for the Corporation, said that it had managed to organise a minibus service around the town’s beaches. The meeting concluded with a lively question-and-answer session chaired by new alderman Anthony Richardson, during which issues such as ferry schedules and speed bumps were discussed.
