Swan throws support behind lottery

Lottery: Charlie Swan

MP Charlie Swan wants Bermuda to have a national lottery for Bermuda.Mr Swan said such a move contained in a motion in the tabled in the House of Assembly would allow additional funding for programmes aimed at the Island’s youth.“I have long expounded on gaming — which covers a wide range of entertainment — and pointedly the need for a national lottery, which is a bit more specific,” Mr Swan said.Speaking before Parliament was dissolved yesterday, Mr Swan said: “Notwithstanding the Government’s intention to table legislation on a referendum on gaming, I notified the legislature some months ago of my wish to lay my motion.”Government said in the Throne Speech that it would move to have a referendum on gambling. But that will not now be debated as Parliament has been dissolved.Mr Swan’s motion was tabled on Friday.Mr Swan said that both he and fellow UBP MP Kim Swan have received overwhelming support from their constituents on the proposal.“It is my belief that a national lottery should be the first form of gaming that our Island pursues,” he said.“I believe that it is a milder form of gaming entertainment, would generate quite a lot of local interest, and would reap real benefits for our youth, all at a time when Bermuda could use a bit of impetus, and Bermudians a boost in national pride.”A Progressive Labour Party spokesman said that the party was not taking anything off the table when it comes to finding ways to continue raising funds to invest in Bermudians. The One Bermuda Alliance meanwhile has said that they support the concept in principle, but warned that the economics of such a lottery in a small jurisdiction might prove challenging.
