Beware of citing the Bible

October 15, 2012Dear Sir,Certainly you could be forgiven the conundrum presented as what to print during "silly season" (intense political one upmanship). The posturing and partisan support by inveterate party loyalists must be quite a challenge when choosing what to print and avoid charges of political bias! The obsession to gain advantage consumes us all when entering the court of public opinion to prosecute our case. The Bible becomes a rich repository of quotes and standards that can be used to skilfully underscore a really good position. I would caution against misusing the Bible and God to advance a party political position. This after all is an intensely religious community. The mantra needs to be every man for himself and "God" for us all in the political arena. Some of us possess more depth in theological matters than others, and therefore should lead by example. We pray for a good and safe election by a mature and responsible electorate. God does not vote in elections anywhere in the world! Stand up, family, vote your heart and conscience in an attitude of prayer. A break from our own bias I believe is a good thing.WAYNE B SCOTTSmith’s
