The OBA’s plans for the future
Recently, a Government spokesman and Progressive Labour Party candidate said the One Bermuda Alliance “hasn’t told us how they are going to address Bermuda’s most vexing challenges”.This statement is rich because the Government has not told the people of Bermuda what it is doing to address Bermuda’s most vexing challenges.Indeed, its push to pressure the One Bermuda Alliance to reveal its election platform strongly suggests two things:1) The Government itself doesn’t have a plan to address the Island’s vexing challenges; and2) Its need to shift public attention away from that fact. The hard reality is that the Government has led Bermuda into a world of unemployment, shootings and debt, with no end in sight. Its silence on what to do about these challenges says to me that it is out ideas and out of solutions. If Government had the ideas, if it had the solutions, surely you would have heard about them by now. Its job, after all, is to govern to make people’s lives better, and not to hold back for any reason, especially for an election not yet called. It is clear to us that the Government has no plan to speak of, no economic recovery plan, no jobs plan and no education plan not one that we can see.Just ask yourself: What is the Government’s economic recovery plan? I, for one, don’t know, and, as a candidate for the OBA, I pay close attention.Because the Government has no plans, its operatives are working really hard to make the Opposition appear like it has no plan.Nothing could be further from the truth. The OBA will reveal the details of its plans once an election is called, just like every political party does. We will provide the people of this country with detailed plans to grow jobs, reduce violent crime and provide our children with the education they need to succeed. We will make sure the people of Bermuda have all the information they need to make an informed decision — one that helps their country work better for them.In the meantime, we have outlined our basic approaches to the ‘vexing challenges’ on many occasions, providing much detail, particularly on energising the economy so that once again it grows jobs and paycheques — providing security families need to live their lives. For example, we have said we will:l Push forward pro-growth policies that grow jobs, such as payroll tax deductions to employers for every new Bermudian they hire.l Apply fiscal prudence to ensure the Government lives within its means, through measures such as the creation of a Spending and Government Efficiency Commission.l Bring back responsible spending, fairness and an end to project cost overruns through such things as an independent Contractor General to ensure open, accountable management of government contracts.l Create a public education system that provides our children with the skills and training they need, including an integrated technical curriculum that begins in the middle school years.l Make healthcare more affordable and accessible, while ensuring its sustainability for future generations.l Make a concerted effort to address the underlying social causes of crime such as a Cabinet-level gang task force to coordinate and direct efforts to diminish the conditions that feed and perpetuate gang life.l Build a society for everyone that is based on fairness and equal opportunity and the protection of basic human rights. We will leave no one behind. The Government may be out of ideas and solutions, but the OBA is ready to bring about the changes Bermuda needs. To this end, I will cite the OBA’s mission as recently stated by our leader Craig Cannonier. He said: “The OBA is about bringing forward change to give every Bermudian the best chance to succeed in life. We are committed to social and economic equity for all — meaning good-paying jobs, safe neighbourhoods and a great education. That’s change we believe in, and the change Bermuda needs.”Leah Scott is the One Bermuda Alliance candidate for the House of Assembly in Southampton East Central
