Today's heavy debt burden
March 26, 2012.Dear Sir,In today’s paper (March 26, 2012) you quote Shadow Finance Minister ET (Bob) Richards on his reference to our government debt as he informs us that “This coming year’s debt service ... will be $319,000 per day” my emphasis. That’s not just for distant future generations to pay it’s for us, everyday, NOW.Your newspaper treats this alarming, Bermuda-destroying information as routine news. Doesn’t anyone, including Mr Richards, care to explain who we ordinary taxpaying citizens are being economically reduced in order to enrich the already rich? This is an obvious example of the adage: “the rich get richer as the poor get poorer”.It is only the rich who have spare money to lend.Debt service is what we must pay, ie three percent to five percent rate of interest to the rich people, or the rich institutions, from whom we must now borrow to run our government, which includes the annual cost of carrying and someday retiring our massive recently accumulated debt.JUST THINK OF IT $319,000 PER DAY! That’s $9.570 million per month! Simple math tells us that, instead of regular payment of that enormous sum to rich people, the government could have been bypassing bureaucracy and paying out $1,914 per month to FIVE THOUSAND working, deserving, financially-struggling families. Assuming just four persons to the family, that would be 20,000 Bermudians (one third of the country!) who would be having a more pleasant less stressful life.We must be crazy to be impoverishing ourselves for the benefit of the rich ...EXHAUSTED TAXPAYERPaget
