Losing pride in Bermuda

February 3, 2012Dear Sir,This island really is pushing me to the point that I want to be like other Bermudians and get my degree and take my experience and knowledge and go elsewhere.I love when I am abroad or when I was in university in Canada to say I am Bermudian, but now I am losing that pride. What am I to be proud of? A Government that repeatedly is in disrepute? A Government that cannot financially manage themselves out of a wet paper bag? A crime rate and successful conviction rate that is totally embarrassing? No, no and no. These are things that make me cringe. When are things going to change? Yet again the PLP is trying to cover up things released in a scathing Auditor General’s report, but you know what? People will still vote for them and it makes me downright sick and I do not care who I offend by saying so anymore.I have always said that everyone eligible should vote as it is not only a civic right, but a civic duty. Now I am to the point where I honestly would encourage people not to vote because they are voting for candidates for ALL THE WRONG reasons. If you are going to vote blindly, under prejudicial reasons, because it’s your cousin’s best friend or some other personal tie or just be plain daft ... DON’T VOTE! Don’t even waste the ballot counters time! Stay home. Most the people that vote these ridiculously and blatantly foolish politicians are the FIRST ones to complain, but absurdly vote them in AGAIN AND AGAIN. We also have “Miss I am a cog in the wheel” at the helm of the Government who wants to raise duty on everything to help rip more money from our pockets.WAKE UP BERMUDA. Businesses both local and international are packing up all around us. We are a sinking ship. We either need to bail out faster or abandon ship. People need to stop being afraid to speak up. Speak frankly and stop the political jargon. The problem is on this Island if you say something about someone else NO MATTER HOW RIGHT you are and they don’t look, act, pray or talk like you then that person plays the prejudice card against you because the PLP has shown us that’s what’s mature and the norm to do. WRONG.So let me be frank, I am white and of Portuguese and British descent and I can’t stand this Government, not because they are majority black, not because they aren’t my religion, not because they live on one side of the Island that I don’t, not because of anything other than the fact they are DESTROYING this island. And don’t think I am some blind OBA or UBP follower because they are not the cat’s miaow either. Politics in Bermuda across the board needs an overhaul but it won’t happen until we voters stop being cowards or blind sheep and exercise our right and duty to put proper people into power.ROBERT DAVIES JR.Devonshire
