Watson praises medal winners

Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson has praised the performances of the Island’s athletes who competed at the CAC Senior Championships in Puerto Rico.The Island claimed two medals at the Championships with Tyrone Smith and Arantxa King winning a gold and silver, respectively, in the men and women’s long jump at the weekend. Smith, who won a gold at last summer’s CAC Games at the same venue in Mayaguez, posted a leap of 8.06 metres while King set a personal best with a jump of 6.47m.Last month Smith became the first Bermudian to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics when he jumped 8.16m at the Rice University meet in Texas.Watson said: “All in all, the team performed well and gave 100 percent in their competitions.”Heptathlete Shianne Smith, who carried on her good form the Island Games, set a new record in 100m hurdles in a time of 14.76 seconds and also won the 800m in a time of two minutes and 16.52 seconds.Watson added: “Shianne eventually finished with 5,177 points, which is well within the standard for the Pan Am Games of 4,850.”Andrea Jackson finished ninth overall in the heptathlon with 3978 points.Sprinter Tre Houston false started in his 100m heat, and finished 17th overall in the 200m in a time of 21.47 seconds.In his first international competition, Lamont Marshall came 11th in the 1500m in 3:55.00, and 6th in the 5000m (14:53.67).Fellow first timer Darico Clarke placed 13th overall in 1:58.69, while Jasmine Brunson finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.01m.Middle distance runner Aaron Evans travelled with the team was unable to compete due to a hamstring injury.Watson was also elected to the NACAC board as a council member.
