Khano learns from Man United coach
Khano Smith was shown the ropes by Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen at a weekend coaching course in Somerset, New Jersey as the Bermudian looks to earn his coaching badges. The former Revolution winger is aiming to get his badges in order to become a qualified coach and is hopeful he can convince Meulensteen to come to local shores and help Bermuda’s coaches.“It was a good course, very informative and gave an insight to what goes on at the big clubs, in this case Manchester United,” said Smith.“I’m trying to get the course to Bermuda so that the Island can get a feel for what it takes to not only be a good coach but also how to get your players motivated regardless of their age.“He gave a lot of insight on what they do at United and how he changed their youth programme and you can see with the talent that is emerging from their ranks that he is doing something right.“I learned a lot from it and I think it would be well received on the Island.”Meulensteen’s role at United saw him work increasingly with United’s senior team to the point that he became first team coach early in season 2008/09, following the departure of assistant manager Carlos Queiroz. The affable Dutchman, who retired from a playing career in the Dutch lower leagues at the age of 29, is in his second spell at Old Trafford, first arriving in Manchester in 2001 and quickly set about overhauling United’s approach to coaching children in the club’s Academy.
