Trott sets personal best to grab Bermuda's first medal
Sean Trott won a bronze medal for Bermuda in the opening event of the Natwest Island Games on the Isle of Wight, England.The 21-year old road runner set a new personal best for the half-marathon distance as he finished third in yesterday’s race in a time of one hour, 12 minutes and 22 seconds.Trott, who was also third in last month’s May 24 Half Marathon, finished behind winner Lee Merrien (Guernsey) and Kevin Loundes (Isle of Man). Merrien, who competed in the 2007 Bermuda International Race Weekend 10K as an elite guest athlete, won the morning’s event in 1.08.36.Bermuda’s other runner in the men’s half-marathon, Stephen Allen, finished 11th in 1.16.11 around 10 minutes faster than his May 24 result to help the Island’s men’s team to the bronze medal.In the women’s race the Island’s Deon Breary also ran a lifetime best as she claimed a top ten finish. The May 24 women’s champion was ninth in 1.28.52. The women’s race was won by Aland’s Johanna Kahlroth in 1.22.09.Donna Watson, president of Bermuda Track and Field Association, is hoping the Island’s athletics team can add to Trott’s medal win.“That is great for Sean getting the bronze medal and the half marathon team winning the bronze also,” she said. “I’m sure the rest of the athletic team will put in great performances and win a few more medals.”Bermuda’s cycling team comprising of Darren Glasford, Tre-shun Correia, Dominique Mayho tackled their first event today with a 60 min criterium which was held in the Ventnor Town Centre yesterday.The field was made up of 60 riders, which included past Commonwealth and Olympic Games participants from various small Islands. The start of the race saw the Team positioned in the top 15 with in the field.The race went off at a furious pace from the gun with a first lap crash that lead to the race being stopped temporarily. Fortunately, the team narrowly escaped the crash which saw four riders going to Hospital with the worst injury being a broken collarbone. At the restart it was the same furious pace with speeds in excess of 38 mph being hit on the tight and technical 800m course.Within a few laps 15 riders established a break that was to eventually whittle down to eight riders which included riders from Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Wight, and Saaremaaa.Bermuda’s team remained in contention and were positioned in the chasing group. The race was won by Tobyn Horton of Guernsey, Greg Mansell of Jersey, and Indrek Rannama of Saaremaa. Bermuda’s riders finished in a chasing group.The team next see action today with Neil de ste Croix competing in the Mountain bike Criterium race.Bermuda men’s basketball team won their opening game 129-13 against Froya yesterday. Dean Jones top scored with 22 points.More than 4,000 athletes from 24 teams, representing 14 sports are competing at the Games, which run until July 1.
