Smith rolls back years in St George’s win

St George’s, 249 for nine, beat –Devonshire Rec, 219 all out, by –30 runs.Devonshire Rec crumbled in dramatic fashion to hand St George’s victory on their return to the top-flight yesterday.The home side appeared to be cruising to victory on 162 for four, but the loss of Dean Stephens (54) triggered a collapse that saw them lose their last six wickets for –57 runs.St George’s meanwhile were guided to their winning total by coach Clay Smith, who rolled back the years to score an unbeaten 64, rescuing his side from 161 for six in the process in a game reduced to 40 overs a sideThe visitors though had no right to win and Rec fans and players alike were left scratching their heads after their team snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.Needing 250 to win, Rec made a shaky start, losing opener Cal Grimes (15) early on, and slipping to 54 for two at one stage.However, Stephens and –Ricardo Brangman (63) put on 100 runs for the third wicket, and at 154 for two Rec were in complete control.St George’s though never stopped fighting, and with Oronde Bascome, who took four wickets, leading the bowling attack they dismissed Stephens and Brangman to give themselves a sight of victory.In the end, Rec really beat themselves, and of the other batsmen only Sinclair Gibbons (15) and Derrick Brangman (15) made it into double figures.St George’s should be thanking veteran Clay Smith for reaching their total, with the former St George’s Cup Match skipper stroking a boundary filled 64 that included 11 fours.Bascome (48) and fellow opener Christian Burgess (72) put on 73 for the first wicket, while Richard Todd added a valuable 36 to pace the side early on.With wickets falling, Smith strolled to the crease and blasted the side from 161 for six to their total of 249 for nine in their allotted overs, ending not out on 64.Derrick Brangman grabbed three wickets for the Rec., while Herbie Bascome and Kevin Abraham took two wickets each.
