Burgess: Trophy win will make up for poor season
Hamilton Parish captain Nigel Burgess has urged his team-mates to put their disappointing season behind them by winning the Shield final. The Hot Peppers hoped to bounce back to the top-flight at the first time of asking but finished sixth in the First Division one place below Wolves who they play in the Sunday’s final.Burgess believes lifting the Shield would be some consolation after missing out on promotion, but expects a tough game against an “evenly matched” Wolves.“(This season) has been a bit disappointing as we expected to have a better go at promotion,” said the team’s goalkeeper. “Promotion was our ultimate goal, but winning a cup would be a good consolation.”Burgess has singled out striker Vincent Minors and defender Hopte Burrows as Wolves’ danger men, although he remains confident of a Parish victory.“It’s going to be a hard fought game and we know what Wolves have with Vincent (Minors) up front, Hopte Burrows at the back and of course John Barry (Nusum) who could suit up. We’re very confident going into the game but we know what we’re up against and we will not be taking Wolves lightly we’re evenly matched,” said the Bermuda international.Parish’s task has not been made any easier in the absence of Kaiya Darrell who misses Sunday’s match through suspension, but Burgess is backing them to cope without their influential midfielder.“All of our players are ready to go but we will be without Kaiya Darrell who is suspended he will be a big miss,” he said.“We’ve been without him in the last few games and have done okay. However, he does give us a big energy boost in the midfield but we will just have to cope without him.”Parish take on Wolves at 2pm at the NSC on Sunday. The day’s other games will see Dandy Town play Somerset in the Player Development League final at 12pm, and North Village face Devonshire Cougars in the Friendship final at 4pm.
