Sisterhood self-esteem

Let's talk: Andresa Julien-Osborne, shown here surrounded by the participants of last year's conference, is calling girls to attend the day-long Girls' Talk conference on April 4 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess designed especially to address interests and issues of middle school girls.

On April 4th, from 8.30am to 3.30pm the second annual Girl Talk Conference will be held when positive speakers will talk with girls in Bermuda ranging in age from ten to14 years old. The theme of the conference, to be held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, is ‘Be True to Yourself: Love Yourself’, and fun and interesting topics will be discussed and new friends will be made, so young women are encouraged to come out and join the fest!Andresa Julien-Osborne, founder and creator of Girl Talk, noted, “The cost of the conference is $60. This includes a goody bag, Girl’s Talk 2011 T-shirt, and a fabulous lunch.”“The conference will feature guest speakers on the topics of ‘Breaking the Cycle of Bad Relationships’ and ‘Discovering your Hidden Talents’,” Ms Julien-Osborne continued. There will also be games provided by Young Life, a dance choreographed by Ms Dyann Simmons, and a ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ dance competition.Girl Talk first started when Ms Julien-Osborne began questioning her moral purpose in life. After discovering who the late Dame Lois Browne-Evans was, she realised what a powerful and effective impact Dame Lois had left in Bermuda. That enabled Miss Julien-Osborne to think about the legacy she would leave behind. She wanted to know how she could honour those who came before her and opened up the doors for countless opportunities. Hearing stories from her family about how Bermuda has drastically changed, she acknowledged the fact that young ladies lack respect for themselves, elders, and other females, and that they are sometimes unaware of what they are doing. In their home environment they may experience multiple issues such as emotional, physical, alcohol and drug abuse. They may also be experiencing minimum education and be surrounded by poverty. After realising all the negative impacts the world has among the future leaders of Bermuda, Miss Julien-Osborne created a successful organisation. This organisation builds awareness and education so that the cycle can be broken. She created Girl Talk, the goal is to foster sisterhood and build self-esteem among girls of various ages and socio-economic status. It is to help build in the girls a global mindset and realise their limitless potential.Girl Talk started in April 2010, with 80 girls enrolled. This year the aim to have 110 girls. The organisation is working on encouraging more girls to come, creating fundraisers and soliciting helpful sponsors.“I met a lot of new friends; guest speakers came and spoke to us about different topics also. My favourite topic was about fashion,” said Destinee Taylor, 13, of last year’s conference. “One important topic we learnt about was internet safety. Mr Peets came and told us how we should be careful of what we post online, especially on Facebook.”“I really enjoyed going to Girl Talk!” said Shondenae Woods, 13.Girl Talk has been very effective among the young girls of Bermuda; it has left a positive impact on their life. They can take what they’ve learnt and apply it through everything they go through. It has taught many girls to be modest, respectful, and confident.Registration for the conference will occur on Saturday March 26, 2011 at Pirate’s Port, on the lower level of the Washington Mall, Hamilton, from 11am to 2pm.
