Seniors and teens get to know each other

Keeping Bermuda beautiful: "Blue team" from the Learning Express Academy found lots of litter on Bermuda's roads to put into trash bags.

At Learning Express Academy we take the time to help the citizens of Bermuda, writes Nicole Lowe.

Our classes take turns serving the seniors at the Hamilton Citadel. It sometimes seems like a difficult and long task to do, but a strong work ethic and having a lot of hands can get the work done quickly. Helping people makes you realise how much the senior citizens appreciate teenagers doing a good deed. This is a wonderful experience, which you can get many smiles of joy from. Knowing that I've done something amazing makes me feel good.

Cameron Horrell agreed that there is no better feeling than knowing that you helped someone. It is a lot of work and it is not always the most fun thing, but when you see the seniors' faces light up, it all becomes worth it. I love the feeling I get after helping people, especially when they are elderly.

The school also participated in cleaning up the environment. Corey Torak reported that in March, our school had a KBB clean-up. The yellow team, green team, blue team, and red team had a competition to see who could collect the most trash. The yellow team went to Avocado Park. I don't know where the other teams went. We found a lot of beer bottles, shoes, a bike, and a blue cooler. It was fun, except for the part where my leg got stuck in barbed wire. That's a whole new story, though. My friend found barbecue sauce. We drew faces on the trees. Yellow team won the competition! It was a cool, weird, and fun day!

Brian Longworth also noted that the K.B.B. clean-up was a great deal of fun! Seeing the whole school come together for one cause, to keep our island beautiful and in pristine condition was wonderful. My classmates and I had no idea that littering and garbage on the streets was such a big problem. Now we all realise how important cleaning up and not littering is. I hope that my school and I get another chance to help the community.
