Police rule out underage drinking at violent after-prom party

Underage drinking did not take place at the Bermuda High School after-prom party which ended in a violent fracas, Police have concluded.

Officers launched an investigation after one boy was allegedly hit over the head with a bottle and someone smashed the ceiling by swinging a chain at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in the early hours of Sunday, May 31.

Police have said a number of people at the event were under 18, and questioned the level of adult supervision. The party was organised by students.

However, a Bermuda Police Service spokesman said yesterday: "An investigation was conducted into the incident. Investigators spoke with management at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club as well as witnesses and no offences were disclosed.

"Therefore, no further Police action was necessary and the matter has been closed." Some reports said up to 400 people packed into the yacht club — 300 more than expected — with just two security guards on duty.

It is thought gang members from 'town' invaded the party and fought with a boy from Somerset who was dating a BHS graduate. Two people were injured, one of whom needed hospital treatment for lacerations on the back of his head.

Witnesses said ID checks were not made, and that there were no adult chaperones.
