Aliyu's fast finish just enough

Aziza Aliyu put the disappointment of finishing second in the Elite Women's mile to win the International Race Weekend women's 10K on Saturday.

In a tight finish, the Ethiopian just managed to out-sprint Salome Kosgei of Kenya to win by three seconds in a time of 34:14.

Jamaica's Korene Hinds grabbed her second third-place finish in two days, finishing in 35:25, while team-mate Kenia Sinclair, who won the inagural Elite Women's KPMG Invitational Mile was fifth.

Females from overseas finished in a bunch, filling every place from 12th to 17th.

Given the horrendous conditions, Aliyu's time was perfectably respectable, although far short of her personal best of 32:43 she set in New Jersey in May last year, and she was convinced she could have gone faster if she hadn't competed in the mile race the night before.

"The run was ok, but the course was very hard," Aliyu said, speaking through an interpreter. "The hills and the weather made it very difficult, and the rain just made it worse.

"My muscles were a little bit sore from yesterday, and because the rain made it hard going, I just struggled a little bit. I think I would have gone quicker if I hadn't run on Friday night.

"In the end I just wanted to get through the last mile, my hamstring started to tighten up, but I just went for the finish line and gave it my best."

Aliyu's win on Saturday came on the back of another good win two weeks' ago in the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in New York's Central Park, and after leaving Bermuda she will head to Washington DC for her next competition.

The Ethiopian will be back next year though, having taken to Bermuda from the moment she arrived.

"It is a nice country, it is very beautiful, I like it here," she said. "I'm definitely coming back next year."

While Aliyu was winning the overall women's race, Dawn Richardson was the first local to finish, ending with a time of 41:20. Richardson's finish, alongside her third-place in the Elite Mile, put her in a strong position for the Bermuda Triangle Challenge.

Friday night's local female mile winner Jennifer Alen finished second, and mom-to-be Ashley Estwanik followed up her impressive display in the mile on Friday night to finish fourth in a time of 44:15. But third among the locals was Shona Palmer who clocked 43:06 to lift the overall Masters crown, ahead of Alison Harvey (44:56).

Another to make her mark was Carolyn Conway (49:59) who was the second-placed Senior Master (over 50).
