Rage to host women's national team

Bermuda's new-look women's national team leave for the United States tomorrow for an intensive week-long training camp at Reading Rage.

A squad of 30 players will head to the Pennsylvania-based club where they will be put through their paces by Jeremy Salaam and his team of coaches as well as playing a number of competitive matches.

Four teenage members of Bermuda's youthful squad have already gained overseas experience while playing in the USL's SuperYLeague this summer after being identified by Bermuda Football Association (BFA) as players with potential.

Dandy Stars' Shonte Campbell, Lady Cougars' Donte Allen, North Village Lady Rams' Dominique Richardson and Jaylen Bean were among ten national academy youngsters sent by the BFA to the East Coast to further their football development.

Vance Brown, one of the women's national team coaches, said the quartet earned rave reviews from their time playing in the youth division of the USL programme, and hoped their extra experience would rub off on the other girls during their training camp at Rage.

"The team has been training since the national academy was established back in May and we're pleased with the progress they have made," said Brown, who will travel with the team along with head coach Salaam and Don Lewis.

"A squad of 30 players will be travelling to Pennsylvania and all the girls are aged between 14 and 20 – it's a very young team. The camp will consist of both training sessions and competitive matches. We will be playing against Reading Rages' women's team and as well as other teams from the area.

"We're not preparing for anything in particular, it's a case of giving these players some experience of overseas competition.

"Four of the squad have been playing in the US this summer in the USL SuperYLeague and returned to Bermuda recently with very good reports."

The BFA have established close ties with Reading Rage over recent years. Technical director Derek Broadley is a former head coach of Rage, while president Richard Calderon previously owned a 30 percent stake in the club with his brother Robert and ex-West Ham striker Clyde Best.
