Strange direction of tourism

April 2, 2009

Dear Sir,

I don't want to be a pest, having recently given my views about the strange direction of tourism from a visitor's view. However, Bermuda Tourism does a better job of "talking the talk" than "walking the walk". There are complaints about diminishing numbers of air visitors, yet those of us who will travel over 4,000 miles may or may not even find a smile when we finally land.

We have always been thrilled to hear the first sounds of music at the entrance hall — it really sets the theme of joy for our time on the Island. We then touch base at the Visitor's Centre to purchase seven-day bus passes and to learn what's new from extremely pleasant and helpful people (who never fail to comment on my longtail earrings).

Upon hearing the news that this would not be possible, I went to the Bermuda Tourism website (said now to be finally not so out-of-date) and was directed to phone. Upon phoning – the gentleman knew nothing of the decision to no longer staff the VC. It is sad when someone from San Diego knows more about a tourist office than Bermuda Tourism!

This morning, the comment from Senator Dunkley that the position change may have been misrepresented, is just too much – who is making these decisions? Do you really want visitors? If I arrive and the music isn't playing, I'll know that actions speak louder than words – and it will be time to definitely look for another island.
