Transparency will be key in gaming debate

Any attempt to disregard public opinion on a highly sensitive issue such as gambling could be dangerous politically, especially at a time when the call from the Bermuda electorate has been loud and clear. The people want to be well informed on all aspects of any proposal, even those that promise a pot of gold, and plenty of jobs, along with renewed prosperity for all. This is not to suggest that beneath the surface, there are sinister motives by promoters of casino gambling in Bermuda, to reap financial benefits from the lucrative world of gambling, where in most cases, the house always wins. Many Bermudians who have mixed emotions about the introduction of casinos, have themselves made good use of casinos on various cruise ships, or while travelling abroad. The relatively new Government, in trying to negotiate deeply troubled economic waters, to get the Island on a more progressive course, are confronted with pressing demands from various sectors of the business community, to sweep aside any type of referendum on the subject of casinos in Bermuda, which some feel could hamper getting the project off the ground.Although business experts might have valid reasons for wanting to plough ahead without further delay, it might not be in the best interest of Bermuda, if a significant part of our community feels snubbed, because they have concerns, and were unable to be heard. If on the other hand, it is felt the majority are in favour of casinos, there would be no need for a referendum. But who would be able to prove that, without hearing from the populace. There has been talk that a referendum could backfire for promoters, if the Island’s religious community gave it a thumbs down, on the basis that gambling in any form is not a builder of character, and could also have a negative effect on family life, and the need to preserve positive values. The church has the right to state their views as part of the Island community. That is democracy. We must be careful not to lose our balance during controversial debates, and this is not a time to wage war among ourselves especially during this crucial time of seeking solutions to our debt problems, and escalating job losses. Good healthy discussion is needed in order to provide a clear picture of how gaming would work to strengthen our income, mainly supported at the moment, through tourism and international business.Even the gaming promoters must be aware that the project with glowing economic prospects, will not be the end all to our many problems. The world has changed drastically in recent years, and Bermuda has been caught up in some of those changes that are not all on the positive side. The family as we once knew it has undergone changes where in some cases the children now call the shots. There is an illegal drug problem that continues to damage many lives, and despite efforts to stamp out the trade, it flourishes below the surface. Speeding on our roads has practically become an epidemic. In fact emergency vehicles are not as respected as they should be. Going through a red light is also not uncommon. The cyber space communication system has positives along with negatives. Some young people fall prey to sexual predators who pose as new friends. Our police are constantly working to catch those who use the technology for illicit purposes.More attention should be given to our senior population who find themselves in a fast moving loud society, which could leave some feeling out of place. The Government is faced with tough decisions, and they must be mindful of promises made prior to being elected. The worse thing any Government can do is turn their back on the people on any issue. The people are important, and no matter how powerful business leaders may be, they should never be seen to step over democratic principles in their quest for further financial gain.Bermuda needs the best in the business sector working closely with Government, and the people, in moving the Island forward.Bermudians will support any initiative aimed at strengthening our income currently being supported by tourism and international business. All Bermudians want is transparency and the truth. If our leaders keep that in mind we should make it to the higher ground of economic success.
