Opposition meets David Miliband

The United Bermuda Party discussed the Uighurs controversy with Foreign Secretary David Miliband in a meeting at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Thursday morning.

Opposition Leader Kim Swan, his deputy Trevor Moniz and Shadow Finance Minister Bob Richards attended the get-together along with Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Mr. Miliband's private secretary James Hickey.

Mr. Swan said another item for discussion was contingent liabilities related to Bermuda's national debt, against the backdrop of growing concern about the millions of dollars spent on cost overruns.

He said the UBP also put forward its position that a referendum should take place if Independence becomes an issue in the future.

"I was extremely pleased and honoured that the Foreign Secretary afforded the Opposition time to meet and discuss matters of serious concern to Bermuda and to share our positions with him," said Mr. Swan in a statement.
