A celebration of the teaching profession
World Teachers' Day was celebrated in Bermuda with representatives from the Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT) and the Ministry of Education in attendance.
The ceremony took place on the steps of City Hall with Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling welcoming the small crowd.
He said: "On behalf of the members of the Corporation of Hamilton, it's my pleasure to welcome you to World Teachers' Day. I would like to acknowledge the important role teachers play in our society. You are the ones that light the beam, light the beacon of light. I congratulate you on your special day."
General Secretary of the BUT Mike Charles also thanked everyone for coming and said: "We, the BUT, are members of a family of over 30 million educators and today, everywhere within the 24-hour limits, World Teachers' Day is being celebrated."
The day was on Monday and BUT president Keisha Douglas said: "It's my great honour and privilege to stand here before you and give greetings. World Teachers' Day is also assisted by the world community to celebrate teachers and the role they play in mentoring students. When one looks back, we find a teacher who was dedicated and committed to nurturing us and finding us a better future."
Education Minister El James read from a proclamation: "Whereas teachers play a central and critically important role in the advancement of education and society as a whole, and whereas teachers create for our children a stable environment in a wold of shifting values, rapid technological advance and a dynamic education system, and whereas teachers offer children not only knowledge but also a solid foundation on which to build their dreams."
Paget Primary P3 students provided entertainment, performing an educational song based on rapper TI's 'Whatever You Like', with dancing included.
