Bermuda to Charleston leg is a new adventure for Zoë Kempe
Last year, Zoë Kempe took an around-the-world backpacking trip to ten countries and went skydiving in New Zealand.
This year's adventure is on the Tall Ship Europa.
"I did some summer sailing as a child, but I haven't done any big ship sailing," said Ms Kempe. "I'm from a long line of sailors, so I'm hoping that magical sailing talent will burst out once I'm on the boat."
Despite having little nautical experience, Ms Kemp said that she isn't nervous at all about her journey.
"The only thing I'm nervous about is seasickness, but I've got my pills for that," she said. "I keep on getting asked if I'm nervous. Now I'm getting nervous that I'm not nervous."
Ms Kempe started to get involved with Tall Ships Bermuda through a personal connection with organiser John Wadson.
"I've seen him preparing for this for years. In 2000, I was kicking myself for not getting involved," she said.
"My family is going to be on a flotilla when we all go out. That's the greatest part of it."
Having her family see her off on her journey is one of the main reasons she chose to participate on this leg of the race. The other is her desire to see Charleston, South Carolina.
"I heard it called 'the lost parish of Bermuda'. It's always a place I wanted to go. I heard they were going there and said, 'right, I'm getting on that leg'."
For Ms Kempe, choosing a ship to apply for was another hard choice.
"I chose Europa because I was looking for more of a smaller- or medium-sized boat, that way I could really get to know people. In the end I figured there would probably another opportunity to sail on the Spirit of Bermuda."
While some people are nervous about going on such adventures, Ms Kempe tries to find a new adventure every year.
"There are always a few nerves when you're trying something new, but you have to challenge yourself," she said. "Keep on moving. Keep doing different things."
