Sims again dogged by inconsistency

ichael Sims: Finished at five-under-par at the final stage of Q School – not enough to regain his Nationwide Tour card.

The frustrating inconsistency that has dogged much of Michael Sims' professional career again came to the fore yesterday at the sixth and final round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Entering the last day at LaQuinta, California, the 29-year-old Bermudian faced an almost impossible task in his effort to regain his full Nationwide Tour card, needing to move up some 70 positions in the 160-strong field to put himself into contention.

But on the PGA West TPC Stadium Course where he had failed to break par in two visits earlier in the tournament, he showed his aggression early on.

Following bogey at the par-four first, he embarked on a excellent streak which reaped birdies at the par-five fifth, par-five eighth, par-four ninth and par-five 11th, taking him to three under par.

But that work would soon be undone with bogey at the par-four 12th and double bogey at the par-three 13th.

Two more bogeys followed at the par-four 14th and par-four 15th before he finished an exhausting six days with birdie at the par-five 16th and another birdie at the par-four 18th, leaving him at level par for the day and at five-under overall for the tournament on 427. With players still on the course, he was listed in 126th position.

His length off the tee was demonstrated with birdies at all four of the Stadium's par fives, but collecting just seven pars in the round again emphasised his inconsistency.

Only the top 25 plus ties earned their ticket to next year's PGA Tour while the top 50 plus ties will play on the Nationwide Tour. The rest of field, Sims included, will have limited Nationwide Tour status, relying on sponsor invitations and unavailability of other pros, to get a chance to play for the substantial prizemoney on offer.
