Health Ministry to offer speech and hearing screenings for five year olds

The Department of Health will be conducting free speech and language screenings for children entering P1 in September.

The aim is to ensure children's communication skills are developing at the appropriate level for success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy and learning.

Screenings will take place at three locations between July 12 and July 16, for children entering Government schools.

A Health spokesman said: "These screenings may detect weaknesses in areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, thinking and or learning. "Early detection of such weaknesses allows for early intervention, possibly reducing or preventing a negative impact on the child's classroom success."

Testing takes 30 minutes. Appointments must be made in advance. Telephone Susan Price Barrett on 287-6429.
