Harness racing – it's tight at the top
Drivers will be looking to sort out some of the early-season kinks as the the third meet of the harness racing season takes place on the Vesey Street track tomorrow.
Following an exciting Remembrance Day meet, standings at the top of the various categories remain tight.
In the four and five-year-old division, a mere three points separates the leader from sixth position. Favourite Big Red Machine fell to wayside on Tuesday after an equipment malfunction in his second heat.
Special Dream, driven by Catrina Sims, and Johnny Paynter onboard Sure Grand, came away with a win and a second place each to end the day on top of the pile with three points each, with three ponies, including the favourite, one point back.
President of the Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) Nick DeCosta, who also competes in this category, said that the competition level was rising with each heat.
"Right now it is pretty tight because there are three horses level on points after all the races are added up," said DeCosta. "But the favourite at this moment is Colin Mello riding Big Red Machine.
"However, Colin had a hobble break on him in his second heat which saw him fall back.
"So that is the type of thing that can put you out of a race and in this sport the favourite doesn't always win because you don't know what will happen.
"I know what I have to do to get back in it as I was only one point off the two leaders on Tuesday, but there are many variables involved.
"The draw for all category heats can decide a race-day and if I can do what is necessary to get the points needed to get myself back into the scenario, then it can be anyone's title to win.
"But the competitiveness of the racing right now is high as we are getting to know week by week where everyone stands in the categories and what is needed for each individual."
In the Aged Division, which has the most ponies competing of any class, IC's Flashy Ann and Ricky Wilkinson came away with two victories to take top honours while It's Speed Time, driven by Sims, was one point back after a first and second to keep the standings tight at the top.
Also, in the three-year-old class, Cherokee's Superman and Philip Correia strolled to victory in their two heats to lead the class with two points, while and Brona's Mike claimed two second's to be two points off the pace.
Racing tomorrow starts at noon.
