Onions target good cup run

MR Onions coach Mick Ward and his team will be looking for revenge when they take on Young Men's Social Club in the FA Cup first round at BAA Field tomorrow.

Onions suffered their only defeat of the First Division season against Social Club last weekend, but Ward is adamant his team will not be adversely affected by that surprise reverse when the two sides meet again.

"The players won't be thinking about last week's game," said Ward. "The game has gone and we move on to the next one. The players must be focused on the current job in hand, this is another game and another venue. Our preparations last week were scuppered somewhat by a fixture venue mix up, and we were slow out of the blocks when the whistle went.

"However, credit where credit is due, Social Club made it very difficult for us at the weekend, and the first goal was always going to be crucial. We will be looking to make amends and hopefully we can get a result on Sunday. The FA Cup is very important to us, because progression into the higher rounds can provide the chance to play against some of the top teams and top players in the country, It's also another opportunity to win some silverware."

Onions only have the FA Cup and league to focus on following their recent Shield defeat to Hamilton Parish on penalties and Ward admits a good FA Cup run would represent a shot in the arm for the First Division title contenders.

"After our early exit in the Shield, we will be looking to make amends in the FA Cup and give the fans something back. They were awesome in the game against Hamilton Parish and were like a twelfth man.

"They helped us to get back into the game and then in front after being 3-1 down. We have had a great start to the season.

"The players have been fantastic with their attitude and the team ethic we have here is second to none.

"The work-rate of the lads on and off the field has proved key to conceding so few goals and creating so many chances at the other end of the field. I can't ask for much more of my players.

"I ask them to do a job, and they go out there and do it. Hopefully we get the result we want at the weekend and get back on track."

Elsewhere this weekend, there is a double header at White Hill Field with Robin Hood visiting Paget at 12.30 p.m. before Somerset Eagles lock horns with Boulevard at 2.30 p.m. Defending champions, Devonshire Cougars, welcome First Division side BAA to the Den, while Somerset Trojans host Southampton Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club. Both of those games kick-off at 2.30pm.
