Village won't be complacent says DeGraffe

North Village skipper Sammy DeGraffe is adamant his men won't take their FA Cup clash against Robin Hood lightly as they look to book their place in the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament.

The 2006 champions travel to First Division new boys Hood tomorrow to play on the new synthetic surface at BAA Field as the two sides face each other for the first time in a winner-takes-all match.

Given the gulf in pedigree between the two clubs, a mismatch would normally be on the cards with Village being the class of Bermuda football for many years.

DeGraffe, however, isn't looking at the history of either club but rather getting to another FA Cup semi-final.

"We don't want to take them for granted just because they are a league below us," said DeGraffe. "So far in their season they have done pretty well, and they lost a few games unexpectedly in the last few weeks but most teams that play Village are up for the game.

"They have a European type mentality, so one thing they will come with is a lot of passion and they are really going to play hard.

"Most of our guys know what we are in for and we are looking forward to it, and even to play on the surface given that the surfaces we have played on as of late haven't been conducive to how we want to play."

The Rams will be coming up against a side that they don't know too much about but with the likes of Paul Scope and Andrew Bascome among the Hood staff, they couldy be tested.

Familiarity usually results in two sides cancelling each other out but this match may throw a few surprises out for the fans with neither side having seen the other in real competition.

Both are well placed in their respective league title battles and will want to use this match as a stepping stone for bigger things.

For Hood, who have lost two of their last three matches, this could be a perfect way to get their promotion ambitions back on track while Village will be attempting to add another title to their Dudley Eve triumph.

Although the clubs are in different leagues, DeGraffe knows that it is cup weekend and anything can happen on the day.

"It should be an interesting game, we are looking for it just as much as they are so it will be about who wants it more and who executes better.

"I don't really know too many of their players but to be undefeated at the half way mark it was a surprise. I have watched them once when they played ahead of us and they are well organised and with the influence of Andrew you can see it.

"Sometimes you look at the big clubs and say they will run over the lower guys but this is the Cup and for us to play a top team in the First it should be a good game.

"Add to that they have lost a few games and the win would boost them, it should be interesting.

"I don't know if I would say this Cup is priority to us, playing at Village we want to win everything so we will look forward to this and the position we are in.

"We are definitely looking to win this and it is a sticky situation we are in because we can win everything or nothing. But our vision is the league first and everything else is second."

Also in FA Cup action, champions Boulevard will look to continue their defence with a trip to Hamilton Parish while Devonshire Cougars travel to Bernard Park to tackle Young Men's Social Club.

In what could be the match of the day, 10-time champions PHC take on Somerset Eagles at Southampton Oval.
