Men fined for using offensive words

Two friends admitted using offensive words and obstructing a Police officer after a fight on Friday night.

Gladstone Symonds, 30, of Elliott Street, Pembroke, and Melvin Simmons, 29 of Waterloo Lane, St. George's, pleaded guilty to the charges when they appeared in Magistrates' Court.

Symonds was charged with saying: "F**k you Police. What the f**k are you talking about?"

And Simmons was charged with wilfully obstructing PC Devon Richardson while she was arresting Symonds.

The court heard from Crown counsel Paula Tyndale that at 3.10 a.m. last Friday, officers were on duty on Front Street and saw a fight outside a club.

A large group of people were seen surrounding a victim of the assault.

Ms Tyndale said Symonds was seen pacing up and down cursing loudly.

When PC Richardson told him to tone down his voice, Symonds came from behind the victim and tried to push past the officer.

PC Richardson attempted to arrest Symonds, when Simmons came and tried to pull him away from the officer.

Both men were arrested and taken to the Hamilton Police Station.

Asked if he had an explanation, Symonds told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner he was coming out of the club when someone "sucker punched" his friend.

He explained he was trying to get his friend out of the fight and admitted to using profanity but said it wasn't directed at the Police officers.

"It weren't nothing like that. I said 'eff the Police', but it weren't to them. I said 'eff everybody' but she only liked the Police part. The Police stood there and watched the fight."

He continued: "I'm guilty of offensive words but I was just moving someone from the altercation."

Simmons did not offer an explanation for his actions. Both men were fined $1,000, to be paid by January 8.
