Trial for alleged sea cave escape bid man
A Hamilton Parish man who allegedly escaped Police custody and was found in a cave will go on trial this morning.
Gerald Outerbridge was yesterday charged in Magistrates' Court with escaping lawful custody while being in lawful custody on September 4 in Hamilton Parish.
The court heard the 48-year-old had failed to pay fines from August of last year when he was convicted of driving while disqualified, having no driver's licence, failing to wear a helmet and impaired driving.
Crown counsel Maria Sofianos told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner officers had warrants to arrest Outerbridge and went to his mother's home.
"It was at that point that he ran off a cliff and dropped from view from the officers. He was found later hiding in a cave at the water's edge," she added.
Outerbridge's lawyer Arthur Hodgson said he had run into financial difficulties and asked for more time to pay the fines. The amount was not disclosed in court.
He also asked for his client to be bailed.
Mr. Warner said: "The Police went to arrest him and he ran away. I am not willing to release him, why so that he can run away again?"
Mr. Hodgson said his client had "no recollection of the events except that he was pepper sprayed".
Mr. Warner remanded the defendant into custody and ordered him to pay the fines by October 8.
