Drink driver overturns car, hurts himself and gets a ban and $1,000 fine
A drunk driver whose vehicle overturned when he crashed into the sidewalk has been fined $1,000.
Ryan Gaglio, a 29-year-old Supreme Court clerk, was driving his Subaru home to Southampton when he failed to negotiate a bend on Harbour Road at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday.
Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke told Magistrates' Court Gaglio, who had a few drinks in Front Street, gave a reading of 96 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, against a legal limit of 80 milligrams.
Gaglio, who admitted drunk driving, suffered cuts to his left hand but declined medical attention. The car received moderate damage.
As well as the fine, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner disqualified him from driving for 12 months and awarded ten demerit points against his licence.
Police said he was one of two people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving over the weekend. There were 23 reported road accidents, of which ten resulted in injury. Two vehicles were reported stolen.
