WITH VIDEO: Tough choices for Down's syndrome couple's parents
'Monica and David'
Every parent has to deal with the conflict between giving their children freedom and keeping them protected.
But for the family of newlyweds Monica and David, the choices are that much harder.
Monica and David, the titular characters in the documentary by Alexandra Codina, live with Down's syndrome.
The film follows the couple from their wedding day to when they move into their own apartment, facing numerous challenges.
And while the couple are undoubtedly the heart of the film, it is Monica's mother and stepfather, Maria and Bob, who seem to be left with the difficult choices.
While the relationship between Monica and David is never for a second left in doubt, the choices their parents face are difficult and often heartbreaking.
Their feelings are unwavering, but the challenges they face to gain independence are monumental.
Issues ranging from whether the couple should have children or get jobs in the public eye, leave their parents and the audience questioning what is right, and how much freedom should be sacrificed for security.
And when David is diagnosed with diabetes, those questions only become harder.
One of the most powerful elements of the film is that while it brings up thought-provoking questions, it refuses to preach any answers.
The family give their thoughts and opinions, but room is still left wide open for debate.
'Monica and David' is an emotional and thought-provoking film sure to spark conversation on a challenging subject matter.
'Monica and David' will screen today at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
