Watch out for meteor shower

Sky show: The flash of a meteor from the Leonid shower is seen above Arizona in this file picture. The meteor shower is expected to be seen in the night sky during the next few days.

Eagle-eyed members of the public may be able to catch a glimpse of hundreds of shooting stars expected over the next few nights.

The Leonid Meteor Shower has taken place every November 17 since 1998, when Comet Temple-Tuttle looped around the sun, leaving a trail of debris.

Eddie McGonagle of the Astronomical Society of Bermuda said the Middle East and Far East have seen the best displays in recent years, with hundreds of shooting stars per hour.

While the peak of the meteor storm is expected to take place during daylight hours today here in Bermuda, it is not uncommon for meteors to be seen a few days before or after the peak.

"A watchful eye to the sky might be rewarded," said Mr McGonagle.
