Unusual kite from Bermuda wins in Washington DC

Flying high Phillip Jones flies his award winning kite in Washington DC.

On Good Friday the skies of Bermuda will be ablaze with colourful kites, one of which will be an international festival winner.

The green round box 'Crown' kite is the creation of kite-master Dr. Phillip Jones.

Dr. Jones has just returned to Bermuda from the Smithsonian Kite Festival in Washington D.C. where he scooped two prestigious prizes for his aeronautical flair and design.

The emergency physician not only came third in the Master class category, competing against others from around the world, but was voted the winner of the People's Choice Award by members of the public.

Dr. Jones, who works at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, took this year's festival 'Green' theme to its logical conclusion, by recycling his kite from the previous year.

In 2008 the Canadian won the Grand Prize for his 15ft 'Chairman Mao' crown kite, which used Andy Warhol's famous painting of the Chinese leader in the festival's 'China Brushstrokes in the Sky' competition.

Dr. Jones, 45, recycled the kite's framework into this year's entry, winning a trophy for his efforts.

He said: "This kite was smaller, about nine inches in diameter, and used two triangle patterns to make a whirling, revolving pattern to illustrate wind power.

"It used old fabric from my first Smithsonian entry three years ago and made use of smaller fabric pieces sewn together to create the panels. This was to show how many small things can add up to a greater whole sort of how everyone doing a little bit to be environmentally-friendly can add up to a big difference."

Dr. Jones was assisted in flying his entry in front of thousands of spectators by another KEMH emergency physician, Dr. Dave Wakely.

He said his five-year-old son Aidan and seven-year-old daughter Erin were also very proud of his win.

"Erin loves the golden cup (trophy)," he said. "And we are looking forward to flying our kites in Bermuda this Friday.

"I've been flying kites my whole life and making them for about five years. Seeing something you have built flying is a wonderful experience, it is so rewarding. It is something I never lose the joy from.

"To win at the Smithsonian Kite Festival was a big honour, as it's quite a prestigious competition. Unlike previous years the weather wasn't completely cooperative It was cold and wet, but it was still a lot of fun."

One of Dr. Jones's Smithsonian entry kites is currently on display with others kites from across the Island at the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation in Devonshire.

The remainder of his winning 2008 'China' kite is also on exhibit in Canada, at the 'Warhol' exhibit at Waterloo Regional Children's Museum in Ontario, among 50-60 genuine Warhol pieces of art.

Got it: Holding the People's Choice Award in Washington DC is Phillip Jones, alongside him from the left are Harold "Kitesquid" Ames, Dr. Dave Wakely and Dr. Dave Barr.
