Human Rights Commission to host roadshow
The Human Rights Commission is to hold a roadshow to make people more aware of their rights and the services available to them.
To be held on Thursday at the St. James' Church Hall from 6.30 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., the meeting will feature a short presentation, a question and answer period, followed by a meet and greet between the public and Commissioners.
According to the chairwoman of the HRC, Shade Subair, the roadshow is a "welcomed opportunity" for the Commission to refresh the public's understanding of its mandate, examples of discrimination and the complaints process.
Some of the topics that will be part of the presentation include unlawful discrimination against someone because of their race, sex, religious beliefs, or if they have a criminal conviction.
Ms. Subair said: "The (Human Rights) Act requires the Commission to encourage an understanding of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual as guaranteed by the Constitution.
"Therefore the Commission operates on the principle that all members of the community are of equal dignity, and have equal rights and there is a statutory obligation on each of us to respect that. The roadshow is essentially an opportunity to remind the public of the HRC services available to them."
