House will debate Law Reform Commission bill
A bill setting up a Law Reform Commission to ensure the reform of the law will be debated in the House of Assembly today.
Junior Justice Minister Michael Scott will give a second reading to the Law Reform Commission Act 2009, one of three pieces of legislation MPs are expected to discuss tomorrow.
Finance Minister Paula Cox announced the planned establishment of a Law Reform Commission in her Budget speech in February. She said then that the Commission would be "charged with responsibility for keeping the laws of Bermuda under constant review so that our laws may become more responsive to the needs of Bermudian society".
Premier Ewart Brown will also take to the floor to make a Ministerial Statement in which he will outline his plans for "reform" of the corporations of Hamilton and St. George's.
The Motor Car Amendment Act (No. 3) 2009 is also scheduled for a second reading from the Premier and Transport Minister.
That legislation will require airport limo services to pay a permit fee of $2,000 per vehicle and other limousine services $50,000 per vehicle. Mr. Scott will also give a second reading to the Magistrates Amendment Act.
A number of bills are expected to be carried over, including the Prohibition of Gaming Machines Amendment Act, which would allow gaming on cruise ships while in port.
