AG's chambers to focus on client care
The Attorney General's chambers will focus on the development of Bermudians and client care this year.
Junior Justice Minister Michael Scott told the House of Assembly Friday night that the chambers has a list of initiatives for the year.
"A principal focus will continue to be on the development of Bermudians in chambers particularly in the new practice and case management system and continuing the senior development programme for the deputy Solicitor General and senior Crown counsel.
"Chambers will continue its in house programme the next scheduled courses being on copyright and administrative law update and emergency injunctions."
On client care, Mr Scott said: "Chambers has already started this programme whereby each quarter the Solicitor General and specially assigned counsel meet with the Permanent Secretary or department head to review current issues and future plans with a view to anticipating and solving legal problems in advance.
"Chambers has also delivered four seminars on administrative law to clients with a view to reducing litigation and improving the decision making process. It is intended to stop up this initiative in 2010."
Initiatives in legislation drafting include a new Legislative Information Management System (LIMS).
The system has been given a budget of $300,000 and should be completed in September.
Mr. Scott said: "It is anticipated that LIMS will greatly enhance the efficiency of the drafting, consolidating and publication environment for Bermuda's laws. It is an integrated suite of sophisticated software applications that will facilitate these processes."
He added the AG's chambers has been working with a vendor in Quebec and the system will replace the "outdated" legislative technology
"This technology, used in several other jurisdictions in The Commonwealth features a new drafting tool, an assisted consolidation tool for statutes and regulations and point-in-time searching of the laws."
Some of the benefits of LIMS include publishing current legislation electronically, increasing web search capability and producing legislation faster.
