Elderly tourists fight off burglar

A visitor fought off a burglar in his hotel room yesterday in the latest in a series of hotel attacks.

According to Police, at around 3.15am a man entered a guest room at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess but the visitors staying in the room confronted him.

A Police spokesman said: "The intruder made good his escape after a scuffle with a 67-year-old American visitor in the room.

"The visitor received minor injuries to his arm, however medical treatment was not required."

Police searched the area but could not find the suspect, who was described as being a 5ft 10in dark skinned male with blotches on his face. He was wearing a green T-shirt, tan pants and sneakers.

Police said that it was too early to rule out that the incident was connected with similar burglaries that have been reported over the last few weeks.

One visiting couple were robbed at gunpoint at the Grotto Bay Resort, and another couple were robbed at a Smith's guesthouse. In total, there have been 14 such burglaries

"Residents and visitors alike are reminded that all windows and doors should be locked before leaving their property, even for short periods of time.

"Also, before retiring to bed at night all windows and doors should be locked, and valuables should be kept secure and out of sight."

Jonathan Crellin, general Manager at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, said yesterday: "We are disappointed that this happened to one of our guests and we are working with the Police who are investigating this incident.

Anyone with information about the incident are asked to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit at 295-0011.
