Robinson strikes to spare Colts blushes

Robin Hood defender Simon Coombes challenges for a loose ball with a Devonshire Colts attacker in the FA Cup at Police Field yesterday. Colts won 1-0.

There was an FA Cup upset at Police Field yesterday, but not the one that many might expect – Devonshire Colts actually won a game.

In a sometimes bad-tempered affair, where nine players were booked and one sent-off, the worst side in the Premier Division snatched their first win of the season, narrowly beating Commercial League opposition Robin Hood in a game they could quite easily have lost

Bayonne Richardson struck deep into extra time to save Colts blushes and deprive Hood of the replay they so richly deserved.

The Commercial League side defended stoutly throughout, and their robust approach to the game was more than Colts could handle. Simon Coombes and Joel Duffy were rocks at the heart of the defence, and time and again threw back Colts' rather unimaginative strikers.

However, neither side really created a chance of note until the final minute of normal time, when Sean Perinchief's rasping drive from 25 yards was turned over by Hood goalkeeper Jason Simons.

Hood could then have scored a goal of their own when a long-ball caused havoc in the Colts defence, and Chris Chrinnicle outjumped everyone only to see his header roll agonisingly wide.

Colts did dominate for large parts of the game, but were unable to get the better of a Hood side that convincingly won both the aerial and physical battle. And having lost tthose battles, Colts weren't good enough to beat Hood on the floor.

And as the failures to score mounted, so the indiscipline increased.

It plagued much of their game yesterday afternoon, with two players, Mcree Pace and Andre Famous, being pulled off before they were sent off, while Kyle Jones, on as a first-half substitute for Pace was himself eventually sent off for two bookable offences.

Hood will count themselves unlucky to have lost, but they rarely troubled Colts goalkeeper Gregory Rose, and had switched off when Richardson struck from just outside the box.

"We probably deserved a replay, but we didn't deserve to win because we didn't test the keeper enough," said Hood boss Paul Scope.

"But I'm proud of the guys for the effort that they put in, Colts didn't really threaten us too often, and we did well considering we were playing at a different pace to the one we are used to.

"Hopefully we can take the spirit we have shown in this game into the rest of the Commercial League season."

n Prospect United grabbed two goals in a minute to go through to the next round at the expense of Ireland Rangers yesterday.

Darren Harvey and Jerome Laws struck in the 73rd and 74 minute to put their side 3-1 up after Kyjuan Saltus and Jonathan Bean had traded goals early in the second half.

Bean struck again for Rangers four minutes from time to set up a nervy finish, but United hung for the win.
