Long-running conference's future thrown into doubt

The future of one of Bermuda's longest running re/insurance conferences has been thrown into doubt after this year's event was cancelled.

Kaplan Hawksmere, organisers of the International Reinsurance Congress, which has been held annually on the Island for the past 22 years, said they decided not to run the conference in 2009, but plan to host the event in London in April 2010.

They said it was not certain whether the event would return to Bermuda, however, added they will have a better idea once they have seen the success of the London outing next year.

Last year's 22nd International Reinsurance Congress, which was staged at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess in mid-October, featured a strong line up including former US Consul General Gregory Slayton, Leila Madeiros, vice-president and corporate secretary of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers, Bob Cooney, managing director of capital markets at Aon Re Global, and Dr. William Panning, executive vice-president and managing director of Willis Re.
